The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum near Chichester is a magical place and one of the best days out in the South East. For 30 years, this museum has beeen a showcase of English architectural heritage and a window on the world of our forebears. The collection has now been awarded Designated status by the government, recognising it as outstanding. The 46 main exhibits (historic buildings) have been rescued from destruction & rebuilt in this beautiful parkland setting. Each vividly demonstrates homes & workplaces of the past, evolution of building techniques & use of local materials. Come & explore over 40 homes & workplaces of the past, from Medieval to Victorian, including a Tudor farmstead & working 17thC watermill. Then wonder at the gardens; many have been lovingly re-created as they would have been in the period. Children love the open space & freedom the Open Air Museum offers; exploring in & out of buildings, picnics, feeding waterbirds, petting animals, having a go at pit sawing, candle making or other crafts. There's no other museum like it! Don't miss the children's activity weekend when around 30 traditional skills & trades can be experienced first hand. Activities everywhere! There are many special events, with something for everyone including unusual tree dressing.
